What Was That? 3 Creepy Trail Camera Stories from Reddit
You put up a trail camera expecting deer. Maybe a fox. Probably the same raccoon every night. Then you open one picture and find yourself leaning closer to the screen: Wait. What is that?
That moment is practically its own Halloween tradition. A quiet patch of woods becomes a mystery, and suddenly everyone looking at the photograph has a different explanation.
In our earlier collection, 5 Weirdest Things Ever Caught on Trail Cams, we explored some of the stranger surprises these cameras can record. This time, we are taking a slightly spookier route through three Reddit discussions: an apparent costume visitor, a figure beside a tree, and an unsettling photograph from Washington's woods.
1. The Costume Visitor Nobody Recognized
A recent r/trailcam post asks a question many camera owners would rather never need to ask: do people deliberately look for trail cameras to prank?
The poster said a neighbor sent over a photograph of someone in a costume and asked whether they knew anything about it. They did not. In a follow-up comment, the poster described the camera as being near their unmarked property boundary, roughly a 2.5-kilometer trek away. That reported location made the encounter feel stranger than a costumed passerby on a busy path.
The replies split between suspicion and amusement. Some thought the neighbor was responsible. Others described their own camera pranks, including a coworker wearing a Sasquatch costume for Halloween.
That is what makes this story work so well: a costume can be funny when you know who is wearing it, and distinctly less funny when it appears somewhere you thought was empty.
What do we actually know? The poster reported an unfamiliar costumed visitor. The discussion does not establish who it was or why they were there. A prank is a plausible explanation, not a confirmed answer.

2. The Figure Behind the Tree: Person or Animal?
Another Reddit post gets straight to the point: “Am i crazy or is this a person??” Shared by u/Individual-Lawyer389, the image prompted a debate about a shape beside a tree that several viewers read as a human figure.

Several commenters offered a less supernatural possibility: an animal, perhaps a deer, standing on its hind legs. They pointed to the apparent proportions and what one commenter thought looked like a hoof. Others remained unconvinced.
One of the most useful suggestions was also the simplest: photograph the same spot in daylight. Another was to review the frames before and after the strange image. A single still leaves out the very thing that might settle the argument—how the subject moved into and out of view.
Our take: the standing-animal explanation is worth considering, but the discussion is not a confirmed identification. Look at the photograph before reading the comments, then look again afterward. Does the shape change for you?
3. The Woman in the Washington Woods
Some photographs are unsettling because you cannot make out the subject. Others are unsettling because the subject seems recognizable, but the setting feels wrong.
In “Washington State Woods Creepy Woman,” u/Jared72Marshall shared a photograph described as showing a woman in a gown carrying a doll. According to the poster, it came from a cousin's friend's deer camera in Washington, reportedly miles from the nearest house or town.

The doll drew particular attention in the replies. Some readers felt it made the scene look staged. The poster acknowledged that an elaborate prank was possible and clarified that they had not personally taken the photograph.
There is no need to invent a ghost story around it. The missing context already does the work: who was this, why were they there, and what happened outside the camera's frame?
Our take: treat it as an unresolved, secondhand account. A photograph of an unfamiliar person does not establish anything supernatural—or tell us anything reliable about that person's circumstances.
Before You Decide Your Woods Are Haunted
If your own camera produces a strange image, start with a few practical checks:
- Review the whole sequence. A nearby frame or video may reveal an ordinary arrival or departure.
- Compare the scene in daylight. Locate the same trees, branches, and background objects before judging the shape.
- Keep the original file. A small screenshot gives you less to examine than the saved image or clip.
- Separate the picture from its caption. A dramatic description is not evidence of what the camera recorded.
If you want to revisit a location without repeatedly walking out to it, TC27's live view and remote pan-and-tilt controls can help you check the surroundings while the camera is online. They will not explain every odd photograph, but a current look at the scene can provide useful context.
What Is the Strangest Thing Your Camera Has Recorded?
A possible prank. A shape that might be a deer. A woodland visitor whose story we do not know. Trail cameras leave us with these tiny fragments of a much bigger night—and sometimes the unanswered questions are the most entertaining part.
This Halloween, take another look through your camera roll. Which frame made you stop scrolling? Share your story in the comments, and tell us whether you ever figured it out.
